WEATHER CONDITIONS

Season phenology:

Weather conditions:

The weather was favourable for terrestrial vertebrates in summer 2004. From late June to late July precipitation occurred on 16.07 and 21-22.07, and its amount was low in both cases. Sunny weather or low cloudage with weak to moderate winds prevailed in the period of studies, while dull weather was recorded on 5 days in the second half of July. The weather was warm on two third of days when temperatures exceeded +15øC. Occasionally air temperatures rised above +20øC in mid day, and maximal temperature +26øC was recorded on 20.07. However, temperatures dropped at nights, sometimes to +4-6øC, with formation of dew and fog.

BIOTIC CONDITIONS

Rodents abundance evaluation:

average

Breeding conditions:

Numbers of predators (Arctic Fox, Rough-legged Buzzard, Merlin, Northern and Pallid harriers, Long-tailed and Arctic skuas, Herring Gull and Short-eared Owl) were average. Broods were found in 6 from 18 surveyed dens of Arctic Fox, with approximately 4 cubs on average. Rough-legged Buzzard nested at a density 0.2-0.7 pair/sq.km, which is slightly below average. Mean number of chicks in nest was 2.8, which indicates insufficient food resources. Long-tailed and Arctic skuas bred at average density, ranging from 0.04-0.4 in different plots. Short-eared Owls and harriers were seen occasionally in floodplain. Generally, predation pressure can be evaluated as moderate.

Rodent dynamics:

Numbers of lemmings and voles were average and increased in the period of studies. Total catching effort from 14-26.07 was 550 trap/nights, and yielded an average total density of rodents 5.45 animal per 100 trap/nights, including 0.36 in lemmings and 5.1 in voles. We captured 27 Narrow-skulled Voles, 1 Middendorf's Vole (adult female), and 2 Siberian Lemmings. Fertility and involvement of females in reproduction indicated increasing phase of rodent populations, which was confirmed by observations of outbreak on southern Yamal with primary contribution by voles in autumn 2004.

Rodent species recorded:

LatinAbundance
Lemmus sibiricusrare
Microtus middendorffirare
Microtus gregaliscommon

Summary of fauna studies:

Numbers, habitats and data on biology planned for publication in the "Russian Ornithologial Journal".
